Regional Adaptation Project scope approved

The purpose of the Regional Adaptation Project (RAP) is to come up with a mechanism or set of actions that can help us best position ourselves as a region to deal with the current and future impacts of a changing climate.
It is being undertaken on a WRLC region wide basis and will involve local government, iwi, central government and key stakeholders such as businesses and infrastructure providers.
The Project Lead, Tom Fitzgerald, said “Adaptation manifests in a multitude of places, from our management of flood hazards to the way we promote sustainable building design and connect with each other. We still have a lot of work to do – adaptation is not a ‘one and done’ thing, it’s ongoing, and in some cases is merely a step in the right direction. We may need to transform many of our systems to cope with the effects of a changing climate.”
Work on the RAP is expected to take 18 months. Recently completed mahi involved conversations and engagement held with mana whenua, local and central government organisations and other interested parties to refine this project’s scope.
WRLC third Annual Report published

The recently published Annual Report includes an overview of the last 12 months and details the status of the various WRLC projects. It marks the end of WLRC’s third year, providing a good milestone to look back and reflect on what we have achieved since our inception.
The WRLC is now at a point where it has developed and agreed key planning documents covering regional spatial planning, regional economic development and some key regional climate planning documents. Now these 10–30-year directions are clear; we will focus more of our efforts on delivery across the region in the key areas of responsibility for the WRLC.
Take a look at the report to learn more about the work that took place in the last year and to view a breakdown of how funding was spent.
Regional Economic Development Plan Annual Summary

The Regional Economic Development Plan (REDP) is one of the two key responsibilities for the WRLC. The vision of the REDP is to build a future focused, creative, sustainable and thriving region for all to be proud of.
It aims to help create some of the 100,000 decent jobs our region will require in the next 30 years as our population grows.
The criteria for decent jobs are that they: provide a fair income, job security, a safe and healthy work environment with opportunities for personal development, and opportunities for workers to have a voice.
It also aims to improve quality of life by supporting our region to be more productive,
resilient, inclusive and sustainable with thriving Māori and Pasifika communities.
This annual summary is a look at the highlights from the year ended in June 2024 and the latest regional snapshot.
Regional Dashboard – first analytics report

The Regional Dashboard page contains a range of data for the Wellington-Wairarapa-Horowhenua Region, both regional level- and local-level data, for the following territorial authorities: Carterton District, Kāpiti Coast District, Hutt City, Masterton District, Porirua City, South Wairarapa District, Upper Hutt City, Wellington City, Horowhenua District. We’re continuously collaborating with central government and others to update this information.
The interactive dashboard brings together data from multiple sources into one easy-to-use place. This dashboard is designed to allow stakeholders in the region, whether they are Councils, CHPs, funders, or developers to easily locate and understand key data and information. The goal is for this to contribute to making evidence-informed decisions which lead to good outcomes.
We now will be providing regular analytics reports which will soon be able to be found on the regional dashboard page under “data analytics”.
The data analytics page will also contain a recent report the WRLC received on the early census data.
