Regional Economic Development Plan Update

While Wellington is already home to some of Aotearoa’s biggest technology companies, WellingtonNZ and Creative HQ are supporting the next generation of high-growth, high-value technology companies through a recently launched technology sector strategy. The strategy includes the first technology initiatives from the Regional Economic Development Plan being implemented by WellingtonNZ, which aims to create some of the 100,000 high-value jobs needed in the region over the next 30 years.

Initiatives underway include:

  • The Scale-up Wellington Support Package, which will see eligible companies given co-working space at Wellington’s Innovation hub, Creative HQ, access to international business mentors, and funding for on-the-job training so as to boost capacity. The package is targeted at early-stage technology companies that employ under five people, have global ambitions and who intend to have a significant footprint in the Wellington region. Applications are open now and more information is available here.
  • Running a Technology Leadership Training Series, bringing global technology leaders to Wellington for a speaker series where they will share their knowledge and expertise to a select group of Wellington’s burgeoning tech company leaders. These experts have been instrumental in scaling their tech businesses into global enterprises.
  • Coordinating Tech Week in Wellington from 13 to 20 May. So far there are 27 events planned across the region including a Tech Careers event for high school students as well as specific meetups for women in tech, a recruitment drive, an event for seniors, and many more. For more information visit the Tech Week website.
  • Hosting Wellington’s Tech Week headline event with marketing guru Tim Doyle on 17 May from 5.30-7.30pm at Creative HQ in Dixon Street. Challenge the way you think about marketing and growth to design a marketing strategy that will prove a success. Register online here.
